Getting started with programming for your kids

September 27, 2018

Hello everyone and welcome to Coding Butterfly’s new channel! Today, I will be introducing you to STEM education and why it is important for kids growing up in this new age. Also, I will show you how you can take part in this revolution with the help of Roblox Studio, which is a great platform for getting kids started with developing their own games!

Just to give an overview, the current education system, with one teacher and students sitting in desks is severely outdated. This system was designed to create factory workers for the industrial age by teaching them those values that were useful then, such as obedience and repetitive learning. These skills are no longer required by the new-age employer. With Artificial Intelligence getting more advanced, several simple tasks that required a dedicated person can now be accomplished by an AI system.

A glimpse into this would be the Google Assistant performing a real phone call as you can see here Video of Google AI . This rapid advancement means that Dell estimates that 80% of jobs that will exist in 2030 – by the time our kids are ready to enter the workforce – have not been invented yet! And yet, we should somehow prepare them for those jobs without even knowing anything about them!

So, let’s take a look at the skills that will be needed in the new jobs that are being created – these jobs require critical thinking skills, resilience, communication between teams as well as coding. Coding is one of the things that in the 1990s only tech experts could perform, due to the difficulty in learning technical programming languages like Visual Basic. Nowadays, coding is required in all domains, from financial analysis in businesses to medical research in laboratories. And STEM – or Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education is the solution to this problem.

One of these tools promoting STEM education is the Roblox Studio, which is an all-in-one platform for game development. It was first launched in 2005 and is centered on the social experience of both playing games and learning to make games. Kids could play other people’s creations while making their own games. As time passed, Roblox has now moved on to include many more features, from customizable avatars to a currency system called Robux that players can earn by completing challenges or selling items that they have created themselves. Roblox has established itself to be one of the biggest companies in the industry, with a valuation of over $2.5 billion and over 70 million monthly users. Roblox developers – mostly teenagers - earned over $30 million last year alone.

Getting started with Roblox is very simple, you just have to go to and create an account. Roblox has a variety of safety setting for children which you should enable your kids’ safety, especially if they are below 13 years old.

Roblox is available for both computers as well as smartphones, but in order to use most of its development features, it best works on a computer.

All of this means that you will be able to sit down with your kids and help them become video game creators instead of consumers. If the game your child has made becomes very popular among players, there is a chance that it may also start to earn money if it attracts enough players. This can also lead to instances in which teenagers who have created the most popular games are earning over 100 grand a month even before starting college! Granted, such a level of success requires a lot of commitment and effort, but it just goes on to show the possibilities of this amazing platform!
